What Is Klondike Solitaire?

Solitaire is a game that involves sorting cards into a desired sequence. This game dates back to the 1780s when it started in Germany and later spread to the rest of Europe. It was initially called “Patience,” given that players need considerable patience and timing to win a game.
Klondike Solitaire is the most common type of Solitaire. It requires the standard 52-card deck to play.

Patience Klondike starts with 52 cards arranged in seven piles called a tableau. From left to right, each pile includes one more card than the preceding pile. The topmost card of each file is placed facing up while the rest face down. The remaining cards are placed in a position called the stock.

How To Win Klondike Solitaire?

When playing this game, you flip one card and send it to the foundation or the discard pile. You can also play the top card from the discard pile anytime. Tips for winning include

  • Always move an Ace or a King to the foundation as soon as you can.
  • Do not empty a pile if there’s no King to place it in within the foundation pile.
  • Turn up the first card from the deck before any other moves. This increases the number of possible moves you can make and helps you make better choices.

The four rectangles in the upper right are called the foundations. You need to place the cards in the four foundations in ascending order, starting with an Ace and ending with a King.

Klondike Solitaire – FAQs

What Differentiates Klondike and Classic Solitaire?

Solitaire is a general term for the game based on sorting cards into a desired sequence, while Klondike is a subset of Solitaire. The difference between Classic Solitaire and Klondike is that the latter uses a standard set of 52 cards while the former is played with 2 standard sets of 104 cards.
Klondike also uses seven tableaus, while Classic Solitaire has 10 tableaus.

How Do You Solve Klondike Solitaire?

To win a game of Klondike Solitaire, you’ll need to move all the cards into the four foundations, each starting with an Ace and ending with a King; Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Jack, Queen, and King.
Given the aim, moving an Ace or a King is advisable as soon as you get the opportunity. It’s also best to move cards from columns with many facedown cards.

What Is the Average Winning Percentage In Klondike Solitaire?

The standard winning percentage for Solitaire games hovers around 80%. Your win rate can be lower if the version you’re playing is more difficult than the norm or higher if you’re an experienced and skilled player. How Often Can You Go Through the Deck In Klondike Solitaire?

In the standard Klondike Solitaire, you can go through the deck three separate times, one card at a time, before the game ends. A player needs at least 60 moves to win a game of Klondike Solitaire. This includes moving the 52 cards at least once, accounting for 52 moves and 8 card flips, totaling 60. But you’ll likely need more than 60 moves to win a game, except all your moves are somehow perfect, which is virtually impossible.
